In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track in just six months. The single Despacito which was a mix of pop music with reggaeton has not just brought fresh focus to reggaeton, but also increased interest in Latin music. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish mostly, and four in 2016. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 19 songs mostly composed in Spanish were in at the very top of 100. The number grew to 41 in 2020. Justin Bieber's bilingual version of Despacito was released in 2017. After that, some of the most popular artists started collaborating with reggaeton artists. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny to create MIA (2018), and Madonna was a part of Maluma for the release of Medellin. A few performers of reggaeton lamented the trend towards mainstream music in 2020. A new band, Rauw Alejandro wanted to maintain the growth and evolution of reggaeton. He often incorporated elements from electronic dance music and other genres.
